Abby’s Saturday // One Hundred Fifty-Two

Lazy Dog Days of Summer with a Black Lab

Highlight of the Week

Last Sunday was Derrick’s birthday!! And for the 2nd year in a row, I photographed a wedding on his birthday (how crazy is that?) He definitely didn’t end up gipped though – we celebrated on Saturday by taking a day-trip up to Erie, PA to visit Waldameer Park. We had SO much fun there! They have the nicest little water park attached to the amusement park and we simply had a blast! We swam, ate park food, rode roller coasters, took Braelynn on kiddie rides, had ice cream – it was the best. On the way home, we stopped at another super tiny park called Conneaut Lake Park – we stopped because it was on our way home & they have 2 coasters there – meaning Derrick’s coaster count is officially at 170! It was a scary park though, literally straight out of a horror movie (I’m not kidding) – Derrick rode his rides and we left. So, take our word for it, don’t go there. Waldameer was fantastic though & we’d highly recommend going there if you’re ever in Erie, PA!

Yes, This Happened

  • BEDTIME SAGA: I am afraid to even type this – I’m knocking on all the wood & crossing all of my fingers over here so as not to jinx it! SO, as a recap: we switched Braelynn to a toddler bed a few weeks ago and she did great at first, but then her independence kicked in & she refused to stay in bed/go to sleep without one of us (me) sitting there holding her hand. It was cute at first, but then when it took almost 2 hours to get her to sleep, enough was enough. Ain’t nobody got time for that. We brought her crib back down & hoped that that was the solution. And it was for 24 hours, but the 2nd night we put her in her crib, she realized she could climb out of it. Fail. So, on Monday, we took her crib back down & brought her bed back up. She was so excited to see it again! On Monday, she skipped her afternoon nap and since it was so hot out, we played outside in the backyard & in her little pool almost all afternoon. We grilled out & had dinner outside – needless to say, she was exhausted by the time bedtime rolled around. We put her in bed & walked away – totally expecting her to get up & come out to us. But not a peep was heard. Like I said, she was exhausted, so I think she literally fell asleep as soon as her little head hit the pillow! The rest of the week, we have followed the same pattern: lots of time outside in the sunshine, no afternoon nap, and no hand-holding at bedtime. She has asked, “Mommy, will you hold my hand?” a few times, but every time I’ve just told her to hold her Daniel Tiger’s hand, and she’s been content with that. LIKE I SAID: knock on wood! But we’ve had a really good week! I’m holding my breath!
  • I bought Derrick a grill for his birthday, so we’ve been living the grill-life this past week! We did steaks and pizza on the grill – it’s been delightful! We’ve really missed having a grill – we use it all the time in the summer!
  • This week was also my favorite Tuesday of the month: Tuesdays Together! If you haven’t heard me talk about it before – once a month, my friend Tiffany hosts a networking group (under the larger umbrella of the Rising Tide Society) for creative entrepreneurs & we get together & socialize/learn/hang out. It’s literally the highlight of my month!

Feeling Blessed

So, this is the second week in a row I’ve had a babysitter here two days a week to keep an eye on the little munchkin while I get some dedicated work done. Let me just say, and Derrick is over there rolling-his-eyes, I-told-you-so-ing over in the corner (just ignore him), it has been delightful. Not only has Mama been happier (because dedicated work-time y’all), but Braelynn has been happier (time with Auntie Ruby is the BEST time), and Ruby is happy because she’s making some money! It’s been so nice to know that – hey, Ruby is coming this afternoon, so I’m not going to stress about trying to squeeze in some work this morning! And so I’ve spent more time with Braelynn, we’ve spent more fun time out in her little pool soaking up the sun, it’s been delightful. And so, even though afternoon naps have gone away, work is still happening! (PS – Derrick told me to hire Ruby last summer, and I didn’t, thus his “DUH” face over on the couch that you can’t see right now)
