Dear Derrick,
I know. Today isn’t your birthday. The official big day was 2 days ago. However, this birthday is a pretty big deal, so we have been celebrating since we woke up Saturday morning! 30! Far be it from me to pass up this opportunity to write you a little note & get all sappy on you.
30.
It’s kind of a big deal. I mean, you’ve been dreading this number ever since we met. We set a lot of goals with that number in mind. Some of them we’ve hit (we wanted to have a baby by the time you were 30 – check) and some of them we’ve missed (okay, so paying off your school debt by the time you reached 30 was my goal, but we’ve come so so close! 31, okay?) It seemed like such a huge number and it was always so far away. But suddenly, it’s here! And it’s really not that huge of a number after all. You’re still a little kid in so many ways: the way you get all teenage-fan-girl-excited over roller coasters, the way you throw your clothes on the floor, and the way you still hate olives.
But as much as you still have your “little kid” side, 30 years has brought some wisdom too, some 20/20 in looking back, and maybe a little bit more clarity in looking forward. You still have big goals and huge dreams & you’re just now starting to begin achieving them! So, who says 30 is over-the-hill? To me, it sounds like the prime of life & like you’re just getting started! When you turned 20, I don’t think you really knew what you wanted out of life, what you wanted to do, where you wanted to go, what purpose you wanted your life to serve, but now at 30, I think you have a much clearer picture. So, 30 is the new 20, right?
I couldn’t be more thankful to be by your side as we celebrate your 30 years. You’re amazing and incredible and annoying and crazy, but I love you and literally could not imagine what life would be like without you. I can’t wait for the next 30 years.
