Preserving Family Memories from March 2024 | The Abbey Archives

The Abbey Archives - A Compilation of our Home Movies & Family Life in March 2024

I didn’t want to create our March family film.
I’ve actually been dreading it for weeks now.

Because in the month of March, we said goodbye to our sweet dog, who’s been part of our family for 13 years. (I wrote at length about it HERE.)

We miss her so very much and we find ourselves still looking for her on a daily basis.
So, needless to say: this was a rough video to put together, because it includes the last videos I have of her. It’s been the grey cloud that’s overshadowed most of our month. (Other darker clouds have also rolled in in March, but they aren’t our story to tell, even though they’ve effected us deeply and delivered an even greater level of grief than we could have ever anticipated.)

As sad as our month of March was – there were still plenty of moments of joy. And I think that’s why I love creating these “daily life” films so much – we might be tempted to look back and simply see the dark, heavy days, but there were still moments of light and happiness as well. Our kids are so resilient and such joyful little beings – despite several rounds of sickness and some serious loss, they’ve continued to be their silly, happy selves. It’s been a great reminder to continue pouring into them how much Jesus loves them, to work with them to shape their character, to talk with them through the difficult moments, and to continually grow closer as a family.

Side note: apparently, March was the month of cooking for the Abbey kids – Leander learned how to make mac’n’cheese and made it at least 3 times. He also became a proficient pancake flipper. Braelynn learned how to make french toast & made us breakfast for dinner all by herself one night!

Moments of note this month:
(0:01) Braelynn and Leander produced and filmed their own mini How Ridiculous episode – this is my favorite opening of any family film EVER. (They did this entirely on their own without a single ounce of help!)
(1:37) March opened with a string of absolutely beautiful, sunny, glorious days – and we enjoyed every moment of sunshine that we could!
(2:36) We started our veggie seeds and our zucchini took off like little rockets!
(3:40) Layla’s birthday party!
(4:16) Introducing Leander – the amazing mac’n’cheese chef!
(5:10) Our first weekend at Deep Creek Lake! My parents opened the house a little bit earlier than usual so we could all come down to celebrate Kennedy’s bridal shower (my brother’s fiance!) It was QUITE cold, but we loved being all together!
(6:44) Measuring the kids and putting their lines on the wall – they’ve grown so much in the last year! (7:14) Easter celebration at church!
(7:49) Alethea’s birthday party!
(8:17) Happy Easter!
(11:32) Celebrating Easter at Grandma and Grandpa’s house
(12:22) We say goodbye to our Abby-dog

Just in case you’ve missed what I’m doing – I decided that I wanted to create a curated “home video” for our family every month (remember those old “home movies” our families used to create? with the giant video recorders that an entire VHS tape fit in?) Those videos were fantastic, but if you’ve ever sat down to watch one (does anyone even own a VHS player anymore?) you very quickly realize that you do a lot of “fast-forwarding”.

So, my goal, is to take all the little videos I take of our family over the course of a month & create a short (my goal is to be around 10 minutes) video of my favorite snippets. I am SO excited to finally have a dedicated place to chronicle my family videos & keep them safe & accessible.

Enjoy a little peek into what our March looked like!
