Abby’s Saturday // Four Hundred And Twenty-Seven

Abbys Saturday Halloween Costumes in Irwin PA
  • It’s officially Halloween weekend! My children have been counting down the days to get her for weeks – and it’s finally here!
We really struggled with Halloween costumes this year. In the past, we’ve done costumes that go together (costumes that have a “theme”), but this year, the kids wanted to do their own thing.
Of course, figuring out that “thing” proved to be more difficult that we realized. First, Braelynn wanted to be a dog, but then I found a cat costume and she decided she wanted to be a cat. Leander couldn’t decide what he wanted to be, and after looking at costumes in three different stores, we finally found this dragon cape and claws and called it “good”.
I tried to convince the kids to dress up as Mario and Princess Peach (they love Mario! and wouldn’t Braelynn be a cute Peach?) and while they were intrigued by the idea, they weren’t 100% sold on the idea (and I didn’t want to spend $60+ on the two costumes if they weren’t going to wear them anyway). Maybe we’ll do that next year.
So, in the end, we settled on a black cat for Braelynn and a dragon for Leander. And a unicorn headband for Abby completed our trio for this year.
If you’d like a stroll down memory lane & what we’ve done in the past for Halloween – you see those posts here: #375, #323, #271#223#171#119#68, & Baby Braelynn as Snow White
  • If you look back through our photos from years past – you’ll see that I almost always took our Halloween photos in the same place: on our front porch with our pumpkins.
Well, our front porch is now an enclosed entryway. And, we never got any pumpkins this year! The pumpkin patch we’ve always gone to closed down, and when Derrick went to buy a few pumpkins at Aldi last week, they were completely sold out. So, no front porch and no pumpkins – oh well.
  • Derrick got a new haircut this week. He strayed pretty far from his usual “shaggy” “surfer” look – he got it cut pretty short on the sides, but kept it longer up on top. The kids and I were outside when he came home and as soon as he walked through the gate, Braelynn took one look at him, screamed, ran and hid behind me in the hammock. I guess I should have warned her that he was getting a haircut, because it shocked her socks off! (To be fair, at first glance, it was super drastic!) I really love it though – I think it looks really good! And, Braelynn has since come around to it.
  • One of my greatest fears, ever since I was a little kid, is that I would leave a book outside in the rain. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve always loved reading outside. And I remember waking up the middle of the night, hearing it rain, and my first thought was always: “Did I bring my book inside?” To this day, I still catch myself thinking the same thing when I hear it raining!
Well, unfortunately, those fears were realized this week. I had been reading outside (soaking up the last few days of warmth) when I carried my book over to the swingset. I set it up in the playhouse, and forgot about it there. So, when I went outside to make sure we had brought everything in that night, it wasn’t on the table or in the hammock with everything else, so I forgot about it.
    And then, it rained.
Thankfully, since it was in the playhouse, it didn’t get completely soaked, but It did get wet enough to wrinkle all of the pages up. Boo.
(I’ve been reading Habits of the Household by Justin Earley and it’s SO good. I’ve been challenged and already changed up a few things in my own life – I highly recommend – and I’m only about 1/3 of the way through!)
  • It’s time for another round of home-improvements! This time, it isn’t quite as “picture-worthy”, but still quite needed and necessary! Derrick’s parents are here for the weekend to help us replace the windows in our house that we didn’t replace when we moved in.
Rewind 7 years ago and we had just bought this house. We completely gutted the second floor and replaced the walls, flooring, and windows. We always knew we’d replace the windows on the first floor eventually, and 7 years later, it’s finally time! It will be SO NICE to be able to open and close our windows and let in some fresh air (our old windows were so old, they truly didn’t open or close well) and be able to clean them efficiently!
  • We upgraded our third floor (Derrick’s office space) with LED’s this week! They look AMAZING – what an incredible vibe they deliver! We’ve been on the quest for a studio space that Derrick and I can record a few things together in (it’s stretched us to look at our house differently – we truly have every single corner of this house maxed out). And adding the LED’s to the third floor has really transformed that space – we’ll be recording next week and I can’t wait to see how fabulous it looks!
